Mustangs Gallop to a 7-3 Victory Over Florence

MARTINSVILLE, VA.- With six games remaining in the 2017 regular season, the Florence RedWolves traveled to Martinsville, Virginia to take on the Mustangs. In a game that lasted just under three and a half hours, Martinsville outlasted the RedWolves 7-3.

The Florence RedWolves (23-26, 9-13) struck in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring ground out from Logan McRae. Jim Wagner led off the game with a single to right field and moved to second on a failed pickoff. Wagner then stole third and Cornell Nixon walked. After Nixon stole second and Zach Jacobs struck out, McRae drove in Wagner on the ground out to take the 1-0 lead.

The Martinsville Mustangs (21-29, 7-16) responded in the bottom half of the opening inning with two runs by the help of an error, two hits, and a pair of walks. With runners on the corners and one out Sponseller drove home Dunlevy on a single through the right side to tie the game. With two outs and the bases loaded Lopez walked to put the Mustangs on top 2-1.

Two more runs were scored for the Mustangs in the bottom of the second and a pair of runs were added in the third. Dunlevy pushed Martinsville to a 4-1 lead after a two-run home run to right field.

Florence cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Jacobs. With one out in the inning Wagner stroked a double to centerfield. Jacobs stood in with two outs and drove Wagner in to make it 4-2 in favor of Martinsville.

In the third, Goforth put Martinsville up 6-2 after a two-run single to center. Lopez reached on an error and Abreu walked to open the inning. Both runners then stole the next base to be put in scoring position before Goforth plated the two runs.

A third RedWolves run was scored in the top of the sixth off of a fly ball error by Goforth. With two outs in the inning and runners on the corners, Nixon lifted a flyball to left field. Goforth misplayed the ball as it ricocheted off of the palm of his glove allowing newcomer, Jackson Williams to score. Williams singled to lead off the inning and moved to second after a bunt base hit from Connor Howell. Wagner grounded into a fielder’s choice before Nixon reached on his error. The score was pushed to 6-3.

The Mustangs added another run in the home half of the seventh on a Keaton Weisz double. Weatherford walked and stole second to open the frame. Weisz’s doubled pushed the score to 7-3.

Chad Butcher (1-1) picked up the loss for Florence throwing 5.0 innings giving up six runs, four earned, on nine hits, five walks and five strikeouts.

The RedWolves will return home for a two-game home stand Thursday and Friday. Visit www.florenceredwolves.com for more information and tickets.
